the d40 is the better camera.

BUT… cameras dont take pics, photographers do. you could buy the best camera on the planet but if you dont take the time to LEARN how to be a excellent photogrpher you will always take crappy snapshot pics.

if you bought the best hammer and saw available do you reckon you could build a house? cameras work the same way.

I’d have to agree with the previous poster: the Nikon is doubtless the best. Although you couldn’t go incorrect with the Canon, Nikon is the professional’s choice.

between the two, i’d go with the d40, but that’s just me. you’ll have to question yourself what YOU want more out of a camera. for instance:

1. the d40 has no live-view, i.e., when you take photos, you’ll have to squint through the viewfinder. are you ok with this, or would you prefer something you can just point and shoot straight out of your pocket?

2. the d40 is an slr with interchangeable lenses. that said, this has a lot of pros and cons already. for one, the bundled lens of the d40 (the 18-55 mm) won’t give you 20x optical zoom. on the other hand though, if you’re willing to invest in quality and flexibility, you can buy more lenses for your body that will allow you greater focal range and/or higher quality. again, point digit 2 depends on what you want or need out of a camera.

3. the d40 is larger and heavier than the powershot. it’s not something you can just stuff into your pocket, and you’ll have to buy a camera bag for it.

4. so far, i’ve been rooting for canon. here’s the last point that, if it were me choosing, would give the d40 an edge over the powershot: it’s an slr. you get a wider iso range, an apc-sized sensor, an interchangeable lens mount, better bokeh at wide apertures, quicker burst rates, RAW capture, full manual controls, etc. basically, you get everything an enthusiast (or sometimes, even a pro) would want from camera. now, what you have to question yourself is are all of these worth it over the first three points?

hope this helps!

The D40 does not have better zoom. And you have to buy separate lenses for better zoom(I don’t know the price, but I know it’s a lot more than 100 dollars for lenses) .

I don’t know how much experience you have, but if you don’t have much, I suggest the canon. It’s a digital camera so you don’t have to buy separate lenses. The D40 lens it comes with will not give you even close to the zoom capability on the canon. If you want it for sports, the canon is better. If you want versatility, the canon is better.

The D40 is better for it’s nearly-professional quality, but if you aren’t a professional go for the canon.

Now if you want professional quality, go for the Nikon. But you must have time to learn, and buy new lenses for whatever you may need.

What do you reckon? Answer below!

Hi, i’m a beginner photographer as most people say. I usually take pictures with my regular digital camera, but it’s getting ancient, and i want real vivid shots. I’ve lessened my results down to:

- Canon EOS Digital Rebel XS

& A

- Nikon d3000

Well, i always wanted a Nikon d40 or Nikon d60, but i don’t reckon i have them in my reach. They seem too expensive to afford for for myself, and i don’t know everywhere’s the cheapest house to get one : So, i lessened it down to these two. I want one that will take vivid and clear shots. One that has shutter settings, so that i don’t have to wait for my pictures. Some cameras take the picture, pause, show the picture, and then let you take another one. I DON’T WANT THAT. I want one that will let me take as many as i want without pausing. One that can blur the background if i question it to. I also want one that’s set alight weight, so that i can take it around with me. Can you help me choose one?
Also, will the camera come with a USB? If not, how else will i be able to get it on my computer?

Answer by Mark
I would get the Nikon D3000, it is a current Nikon model and it has a slightly higher rated sensor than the Canon XS (1000D).

Also last I checked the Nikon D3000 cost less and that saved money will be needed for other items like a memory card, camera bag and possibly an extra battery.

Hope this helps.
