What's the best compact Digital camera for 200 to $400??? (150 - 350 euro)?

Need help – will go buy a digital camera and all the different reviews have confused me

Answer by H T
$ 200-400 covers a wide range of cameras.

Depending on what you plot to use it on and what you look for in a camera, the recommendation varies.

Personally, I delight in by manual controls, and the only company that offers full manual controls in a P&S camera is Canon.

In the low range I would get the SX100 IS, the high range is the S5 IS and A650 IS.

To be honest, though, if you’re just looking for a excellent digicam for general function shooting, you can’t go incorrect with most reputable manufacturers (part Nikon and Canon)

Sony DSC T90 Versus TX5 Compact Point and Shoot Digital Camera Side by Side
compact digital camera review

I’m looking for a compact digital camera that’ll take clear night shots (particularly scenery, like skylines, etc) without a tri-pod. Doesn’t need to be too high-tech, just so the pics won’t be blurry and will look nice in a regular 4×6 print.

I’ve heard the Fuji F30 is excellent for low set alight shots, but any reviews I’ve seen focus on indoor. Can anyone comment on the quality for OUTDOOR night shots that don’t necessarily have a subject in front of the shot?

Also, if you can recommend any other brands/models for this function, delight let me know! (I’m a huge fan of Sony. . .) $ 300-400 price range, give or take.

Thanks!

well unfortunately its nearly impossible to take shots at night without a tripod….reason being that the shutter has to stay open to allow enough set alight in to take the picture which any small shake or anything will blur the picture because its moving while the shutter is open! with that being said if you still want to try look for models with an “image stabalizer” by that if you have a steady enough hand you may be able to do ok! GOOD LUCK!

I have heard that the Sonys do not perform well in low set alight. A friend of mines recently traded his Sony for a new Canon Powershot and he is quite pleased with the low-set alight pictures he’s taken.

Not having a tripod will place you at a disadvantage, as night shots require a slower shutter speed. If you are going to be taking lots of pictures at night, I’d consider by a tripod. I might also look into a DSLR and a very quick lens (f2.8, etc.), as the DSLRs have a larger sensor area charitable it the ability to produce images in low set alight with less noise (given a sufficiently “quick” lens”).

Yes, the Fujifilm F30 is the BEST compact for low-set alight shooting…both at home and outdoors in low set alight (handheld, no sparkle) because it has the ability to use a high ISO (800-1600), everywhere many other compact cameras will struggle to produce noise free photos at about ISO 200-400. Though, by a tripod would still be best in some situations.

The only area the F30 can sometimes struggle in, is outdoors in very bright, high contrast lighting.

So, the F30 is the best compact for low set alight shooting (it’s not perfect), but hey…non perfection is excellent enough.

Also look at the F31 fd, which is an bring up to date with face detection technology.
