This is just my opinion, but…

I’d say that those are two similar but different questions.

No, the Canon Digital Rebel is not considered a professional camera. The higher-end Canon digital cameras, such as the 1D line, are certainly professional. The cameras such as the 5D, 10D, 20D, etc could also be considered professional cameras–although they’re not as rugged as the 1D models. And the Digital Rebel would be, in my opinion, at best considered a semi-professional camera. It is gone a few key features–like a pc sparkle tie, for example–that professional cameras would have.

BUT it is certainly a excellent camera, and some professionals doubtless do use it for some work. So while I wouldn’t consider it a professional camera, in the right hands it can do wonderful things.

I have to agree with kingadam on this one. It’s not quite what some people would class as a professional camera. Even though the 350D is a very excellent camera, it doesn’t have some of the more advanced functions that the higher models.

That said, if the 350D is place in the right hands, professional photo’s can be made. If you want a must have belt go for the BG-E3 battery grip. Not only will it extend the battery lifetime, it also makes the 350D larger, and more comfortable to hold (in my opinion).

If you visit this link and read through, you will find a full breakdown of the cameras functions and samples of the photo quality you will get.

Unless you want some mega quick capture rates (for sports for example), or some of the advanced sparkle techniques then I would go for the 350D. When you reach the limits of this camera then possibly upgrade to a 30D or 5D in the future.

No, the canon Rebel Digital (generically) is considered a entry level digital camera. Amateur or semi-Pro. Canon does make pro cameras like the EOS-1Ds, the 1D, the 5d and they even have a Digital Rebel XT in there line up. I have not seen to many Rebels’ in the field except for possibly a small town newspaper photographer totting one around. Though I believe that a excellent photographer can take brilliant photo’s with any camera, as an amateur camera, the Rebel is no slouch. It is a excellent entry level/semi-pro camera. You have to start somewhere. Unless you have rich parents that will buy you a Hasselblad, look at your budget and choose how much you can spend on a camera and it’s lens. Most of the Pro cameras do not come with a lens. Look at Canon 1Ds, the 1D and the 5D, then look at the Nikon D2x, Dh2 and DX200 for excellent Pro cameras. You might want to even look at Pentax, their *ist DS2 and *ist DL look excellent. though I know nothing about Pentax digital cameras, only there ancient film cameras. I have heard that the Fuju camera has excellent spec’s but fail to life up to anything in the field. What ever you choose, excellent luck and pleased shooting.

Sorry if this has been questioned before, I couldn’t find a specific enough answer or something that really fit. Is the Canon Powershot SX10 considered a professional camera? I want to take it to sporting events and am curious, I’m also thinking of calling the specific venue I’d go to most often but thought I’d take an opinion or two here. thanks!

No, it’s a super-zoom point and shoot camera…

Absolutely not.

It is a competent, amateur, point-and-shoot camera. Anything with a price tag much less than $ 2,000 for the body lonely – with no lens – would have a conundrum being called “professional”.

Though – you do not necessarily need a “profesional” camera to take fantastic shots. If you practice a lot, are critical of your work, even a modest camera can provide some spectacular shots.

Just keep shooting, and don’t get overly concerned about the hardware, but do get concerned about the images.

No, it isn’t considered by photographers as a pro-camera. Though it does resemble a DSLR camera which is a pro camera. An uninformed person may mistake it for a pro-camera. As long as you don’t mount a huge sparkle on it and mount it on a tri-pod you should be ok.

No, it’s just a high end point n shoot.

Professional grade cameras have detachable lenses and a single sheet of glass/mirror over the sensor (hence the term SLR – single lens reflex).

You do not need a permit to use the powershot SX10 at professional events or concerts. My partner uses the SX10 for basketball games etc.

I on the other hand, do require a permit as i have a Canon 5D so am not allowed to use it at events without prior permission in the form of a press pass.
