Q&A: Is SLR worth the extra cost on a digital camera?

Q&A: Is SLR worth the extra cost on a digital camera?

Having problems with my ancient digital camera and I will be replacing it. I’d like to upgrade…I am not a pro, but I’d like to get better quailty pics as I will be travelling alot in the next 2 being …what do you reckon? Should I just invest the extra dollars? Also , are the lower ends okay..I really don’t want to invest 1k into a camera. What about this one if I go SLR…?

Canon Digital Rebel XTi 10.1-Megapixel Digital SLR Camera & 18-55mm Lens – Black

Thanks very much; any advice / tips on export is greatly appreciated. I am of course checking out ratings for cameras , but it would be nice to have a small more than that to go on. :-)

That all depends on what you wish to do with a camera. If you take your photography seriously and possibly even have a career out of it, then yes, they’re certainly worth the money. The fantastic image quality and the full manual settings make them just right for professionals.
But for what you are after, I’m thinking a camera that would be apt for you would be the Canon Powershot SX110. Successor to the standard SX100, it boasts 9 megapixels, 10x optical zoom, 3 inch LCD, full manual control and it’s at a fantastic price (around $ 300 USD).

Heck yes. I went DSLR four being ago after having “regular” digital cameras for a few being. More options, better lenses, better quality pixels, interchangeable lenses – the list goes on forever!

A larger learning curve, but it’s worth it. Canon just unrestricted new DSLR’s, so the grown-up models are promotion for bargains.

For purchasing, try going to shopping.com (not shopping.aol) and type in the name of the camera. Then a list of stores comes up for the camera you pick. It shows weather they are trusted and how reliable, with reviews of many peeps that have bought from each store.
Thats how i got my camera.
The online store was called buydig.com
it worked out fantastic.

In your case absolutely not. For that money you’d be much better off with a high end point and shoot such as a Canon G series. These cameras have near SLR functionality and their image quality is fantastic.

The reason I’m saying this is that the 18-55mm lens is a “kit lens”. It’s designed specifically to be terrified in with a camera at small cost to Canon. It’s build quality is cheap, it’s optical quality is poor, and it really ends up being a 29mm-88mm due to crop factor, which is not particularly impressive compared to a high end point and shoot.

If you want to buy an SLR be prepared to spend a few thousand dollars on excellent quality zoom lenses in the focal lengths you plot to use, or buy flat focal (no zoom) length lenses that will still run you hundreds of dollars each.

Konica Minolta DiMage A2 Digital Camera
digital slr camera ratings

Manufactured 2004 by Konica Minolta Holdings, Inc. of Japan. An "SLR-Like" 8.0 Megapixel digital camera. It used a Minolta GT 28mm to 200mm (equivalent in 35mm film camera) f/2.8-3.5 lens and a 2/3 inch CCD to produce a 8.0 Megapixels or 3264×2448 pixels image. Like the A1 before it, the A2 had a unique image stabilization system that really moves the CCD sensor to adjust for camera movement. I've personally used it to hand hold exposures down to 1/10 of a second that come out tack sharp! This became so successful, it was used on into the Maxxum digital SLRs and then to the Sony Alpha line. Storage was to Compact Sparkle cards or MicroDrive. It had a TTL metering system selectable to either multi Segment Metering, Center-Weighted Average or Spot mode. This supported operation modes of full Program, Gap preferred automatic, Shutter preferred automatic and fully manual. It also had special program "Vista" modes: Likeness, Sports, Sundown, Night and Text. Up to four sets of camera settings could also be saved and recalled by the user. It simulated ISO ratings of 64 to 800. It was NOT interchangeable lens, but did give the feel of a small 35mm SLR—especially with the belt grip show here (which held an additional Lithium-Ion battery or could be fitted with six AA Lithium or NiMH batteries in a pinch). It could shoot continuously for at approx. 2.7 fps for 3 images and supported shutter speeds up to 1/4000 of a second. There was no optical viewfinder—it used an electronic viewfinder by a Ferroelectric LCD (similar to DiMage 5, but higher resolution) that could be swiveled upwards through 90 degrees, provided a frame coverage of 100%, had diopter adjustment and an automatic mode to detect locality of eye to turn it on. It could even shoot small movie clips! It used high end Minolta accessories such as dedicated sparkle units and wired remote controls. It could focus as close as 4 inches in macro mode. It had a small built-in sparkle which could perform red-eye reduction or do fill sparkle outdoors. It used contrast detection to focus. Manual focus was provided by an electronic "focus by wire" ring at rear of lens barrel and "manual focus after autofocus" was an option. In small—you could do just about anything you could do (and some things you couldn't) with a high end 35mm SLR on the promote at that time EXCEPT change the lens. It was powered by a NP-400 Lithium-Ion rechargeable battery (7.4V 1500mAh).

I shop on ebay a lot and see seller shops who specialize in a particular product, say for instance an xbox or a digital slr camera. They sell it in bulk too, stating that they have more than one in stock. They are also reputable sellers with fantastic ratings. They do not seem to be from a company like Canon or Microsoft, so I am wondering how it is possible to be able to sell these bulk expensive items not at flat price.

Any information would be appreciated

Answer by Perki88
Usually they are actual brick and mortar stores.

Answer by Fishmeister
They buy in bulk from the same house that the huge stores buy from. But having no physical store to pay rent for, no staff to pay and small overheads etc means they can sell the items cheaper.
