How can I get Canon GL2 footage onto a Windows XP computer?
I have a groundbreaking new Canon GL2 and I have a 4 pin firewire to USB, I also have skateboarding footage recorded on the MiniDV, and I have Sony Vegas Pro 10 editor which has the tape capture feature, but its not working, the firewire isn’t recognized. Ive also tried just the USB cable. I can get the SD card to be recognized for stills, but the firewire isn’t being recognized. PLEASE HELP ASAP!

Firewire to USB converters don’t work!! You’ll need to capture the video via firewire rather than USB – if your PC hasn’t already got one you’ll need to bed in a firewire card. They’re cheap, simple to bed in and readily available. You’ll also need a firewire cable.

Just go with iridflare, Firewire is the only way. Its worth the $ 20 for a card and cable.

Of course. I’m assuming, knowing nothing about this camera, that it has a memory card… right?
If so with a card reader you can easily transfer. Readers are available everywhere ever cameras are sold for really small $ $ . I have three digital cameras, one of them does video and I transfer this way all the time.
I never use manufacturer software or a cable.

Yes. GL2′s are Mini DV prosumer cameras. You capture video via the Firewire cable that comes with the camera. The cable is pretty standard so you can get one anywhere camera and video stuff is sold. You capture the video from within the editing software. PLease don’t tell me you’re by $ 20 software (Movie Maker) with a $ 2500 camera
If you don’t have software, get something like Premiere Elements if you are inexperienced. If you have edited before and have the money, get a pro-sumer wrap like Premiere Pro or Vegas Pro. If you use Mac, Final Cut.

As mentioned, FireWire is what you need. The camera has a firewire port, your computer needs to have one as well. If it does not, it is a rather inexpensive add-on card to get it. $ 20-$ 30.
You need a cable that will connect to the camera (4-pin) to the computer (usually 6 pin).
At that point, just about any editor worth mentioning will allow you to control the camera from the software. You can go around the tape and capture clips, or just copy the entire thing at once.
DV video takes about 40Mb a minute on your hard drive. make sure you have adequate space!
